Work experience with Sillence Hurn

Sean approached Sillence Hurn for hands-on experience in building surveying. This is how his week went...

Having spent the week working on multiple projects, both in office and on site, Sean joined the team at Sillence Hurn to learn more about what it's like to be a building surveyor.

How have you found your week with us?

"I’ve found it very enjoyable and educational; It’s definitely made me want to be a building surveyor in the future seeing how flexible and unique the job is."

What's been your biggest highlight?

"Working on the building site in London with Harjit, although it was a short visit it was very enjoyable and was interesting to see what a building's structure is composed of and looks like. (Monitoring surveying job)."

Where have you been during your week with us?

"I’ve been in the office for three days, South London to look at an old shop being converted into flats, and a residential house in Shirley."

Who in the team have you worked with the most?

"I’ve been with Derek the most this week, he’s very approachable and knowledgeable about Surveying".

What's one thing you would have wanted to do more of?

"Although the site visits were enjoyable, I feel like there was an equal balance between work within the office and site visits".

Has your work experience changed the way you think about the role/sector, is it what you thought it would be like?

"I’ve learned how diverse building surveying is compared to other roles and surveyors, as it incorporates most roles within the sector and uses a wide range of skills. There is a lot more to building surveying than I thought and has a lot more office elements then I thought".

What’s been your favourite thing about working for Sillence Hurn?

"The team: Everyone has been kind and welcoming towards me and everyone seems to get along well. As well as everyone seeming to enjoy the work they do and be enthusiastic about it."

What could we have done more of to improve your experience?

"I’ve enjoyed my week here thoroughly and can’t think of any points that would’ve made me like it more."

What have you learnt during your week?

"I’ve learnt a lot about the roles of a building surveyor and the paths which I need to take in to become a charted surveyor."

Would you want to come back to us in the future?

"If I was offered the chance, I would definitely be interested in coming back to work here."

Speaking about Sean's week, our Head of Building Surveying Derek Johnson said: "Delighted to have Sean with us for the week, he was enthusiastic and keen to get involved. He got to experience some of our instructions with a few of our surveyors; a development monitoring job and a Residential Pre-Acquisition survey. A budding surveyor in the making! Thanks Sean”
